The George & Philippa Barry Room
Sleeps 3 – King and a single
Option: The king bed can be made up into 2 singles on request
Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea in the privacy of your own patio overlooking the rose garden. The decorating theme of this room is appropriately based on the rich burgundy and dusty pink of Victorian roses mingled in with the sage green of the foliage.
This room has space for a camper cot as well. The Barry House camper cot, farm pram and nappy changer are stored in the 2nd cupboard of this bedroom. There are baby blankets, a receiving blanket and a baby pillow in the chest of drawers, but please bring your own camper cot linen should you want to make use of the camper cot. This will give your baby the familiar smell of home and hopefully ensure a good night's sleep!
The eldest son of Duncan Barry Snr., George Joseph Barry (b. 11/07/1921, d. 14/03/2005) married Marion Philippa Jeffery (b. 14/03/1925) on the 4th December 1954. George was affectionately known as the gentleman farmer. His dry sense of humour and straight talking masked an unassuming kindness and generosity that knew no bounds. Three children were born to them, Janet Mary, Patricia Rose and Duncan John. He and Philippa were a devoted couple and were fortunate to be able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a huge party of family and friends at Riverton. George passed away in Philippa's arms on her birthday the following year.

Hanna (Johanna Fourie) was the devoted Governess to all the Barry family children. She grew up on her parent's farm, Grasrug, near Infanta. She not only helped raise Duncan and Hubertha's children, but all their children's children as well. Famous for keeping a very strict eye on her charges she would also gather them and all their friends up for a feast of fresh farm bread and homemade butter with her renowned watermelon or fig konfyt (preserve). She eventually retired to a home in Newlands. Honouring her request she is buried in the Barry family cemetery plot in Robertson.
